THE ARCADE / PRINTABLE PLAYBOOKFreeCell
A little room makes a remarkable difference.
Move all 52 cards to the four foundations, building each suit from Ace to King. Everything starts face up: four cascades of seven cards and four of six.
One move at a time
- Cascades: build downward in alternating colours. A black 8 accepts a red 7. Any card or legal run may go into an empty cascade.
- Free cells: each of the four cells holds one card. Move a cell card back to a cascade or onto its foundation when legal.
- Foundations: start with an Ace, then add 2 through King in the same suit. Tap the matching suit well. Foundations receive cards only; Undo can take a foundation move back.
Pick up, then place
Tap or click a card to select it and every card below it. They must form a descending, alternating-colour run. A gold outline shows your selection. Tap another cascade, an empty free cell, or the matching foundation to move. Lit wells and columns are legal destinations.
Tap the selected card again or press Escape to cancel. To change your selection, cancel first; you can also choose a different card in the same cascade. Invalid moves explain why and keep your cards in place.
How much can you carry?
Run capacity is (empty free cells + 1) × 2empty cascades. If the destination cascade is empty, exclude it from that count. Capacity is checked when you choose a destination.
For example, two empty free cells and no empty cascades let you move three cards. Four empty free cells and one empty cascade let you move ten cards onto an occupied cascade, but only five into that empty cascade.
Keyboard
Tab / Shift-Tab move through the actual cards and stack controls. Enter or Space selects a card or places the selection. The cascade controls announce their column number. Escape clears a selection or closes a dialog. U or Ctrl-Z / ⌘Z undoes the last move while playing.
Room to reconsider
Undo is unlimited during the current deal. Restart deal restores the same opening layout after confirmation. New deal shuffles a fresh layout after confirmation. A shuffled deal is not promised solvable. There is no clock or penalty for taking your time.
A thoughtful first move
Keep some free cells empty. Expose Aces and low cards when practical, and build ordered runs to make space. An empty cascade is especially useful because it increases how many cards you can move together.
Prototype notes
No automatic moves, solver or double-tap shortcut. A win is all 52 cards on the foundations. There is no reload save: refreshing starts a new deal. This is an independent, single-player prototype, version 0.1.0, with no accounts or network opponent.
The standalone game and this guide work offline after the first complete online load in a browser with service workers enabled. Installation availability depends on your browser. Embedded versions leave offline and installation handling to their host.
